Brett Kavanaugh was already one of the most unpopular Supreme Court nominees in recent history, and while we don’t have a lot of polling data since Stanford professor Christine Blasey Ford’s accusation that he sexually assaulted her when the two of them were in high school, the surveys we do have suggest the allegations have made him more unpopular.
Four organizations have conducted polls both before and after Ford came forward publicly on Sept. 16. A pair of NBC News/Wall Street Journal surveys show a sizable dip in Kavanaugh’s net support.1 As did the Ipsos tracking poll. […]

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein suggested secretly recording President Trump and invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office, according to a report in The New York Times. Rosenstein denied the story in a statement.

The Senate Judiciary Committee said they would push next week’s hearing on Christine Blasey Ford’s sexual-assault allegations against Brett Kavanaugh to Wednesday. Chairman Chuck Grassley has given Ford until the end of the day to work out the terms of her committee appearance.

In a pair of tweets, President Trump questioned both the timing and substance of Christine Blasey […]

This month, it’s hard to be shocked by any report about Trump-administration officials doubting the president’s fitness for office. After Bob Woodward’s Fear and the anonymous op-ed by a self-identified administration saboteur, what else could surprise? The New York Times answered that question Friday afternoon:
The deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, suggested last year that he secretly record President Trump in the White House to expose the chaos consuming the administration, and he discussed recruiting cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr. Trump from office for being unfit.
Rosenstein denied the story in a statement. “The New York Times’s […]

Duluth, Minnesota’s Low is celebrating their 25th year as a band this year. A lot of bands with that long of a career start to rest on their laurels and depend on a formula that has worked for them in the past.
Not Low though. They keep experimenting and tinkering with different sounds and approaches creating something new but also instantly identifiable as themselves. Their brand new album, Double Negative, is a fine example of such things.
What are you listening to tonight?

At the end of tonight’s debate between Ted Cruz and Beto O’Rourke, the hosts gave the opponents an opportunity to say something positive about their opponent. It went just about as well as you would expect:
HOSTS: We are at our final question. Wow. This went quickly. This goes to Representative O’Rourke. We’d like to end this for both of you on a very positive note and ask you to tell us something that you admire about your opponent.
BETO: Senator Cruz and I were both elected to the United States Congress in the same year, 2012. We both have young children. […]

New York Times Tries To Get Rosenstein Fired

What are you thinking, New York Times? How is this news? And I mean that in more ways than one.
First of all, how is this news if it is entirely based on anonymous second hand sources? I’m no doctor, but are sources so thin that we are relying on people who (a) weren’t there and (b) won’t give their names as having read accounts of people who were there? This ain’t telephone, and it isn’t a child’s game, and you’re running with it as if it is nailed down hard and fast fact, completely lacking nuance.
Several people described the […]

Sen. Collins was asked how she felt after Donald Trump attacked Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser through Twitter and she told the press she was ‘appalled.”
This week has been a merry-go-round of adventure in the confirmation hearing of Judge Kavanaugh after Christine Blasey Ford’s allegation of sexual assault was publicized.
Trump had remained silent about Dr. Ford’s claims, but couldn’t contain himself and tweeted:
I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that […]

As you may recall, some friends of ours acquired a cockapoo puppy a couple of weeks ago. As it turns out, their daughter, who clearly has more refined taste in pets, acquired a cat several months ago. She lives in New York with her husband, and that’s where I was last week—so naturally I visited them. Just as naturally, I didn’t miss my chance to take pictures of Tony the cat (named after the Tony awards, I assume).
Now, this was an odd photo session. When I returned home and looked at the pictures, the color balance was all over the […]

British Prime Minister Teresa May says that Brexit talks may have reached an impasse. But both sides always say things like this when they’re under pressure from their local constituencies to look tough. Probably best not to take it too seriously.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein denies this, but the New York Times reports that he made secret recordings of his conversations with President Trump last year after the White House was in chaos over the firing of FBI Director James Comey. Allegedly, he then played these tapes to others in hopes of recruiting cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment […]

Here’s something odd. It turns out that some patent examiners approve more patents than others. These easy-to-please examiners are subsequently more likely to leave the Patent Office and go work in the private sector. But there’s a catch, discovered in a new paper from Haris Tabakovic and Thomas Wollmann. Using data on over 1 million patent decisions they find that examiners grant far more patents to firms that later hire them. Alex Tabarrok comments:
It’s possible that examiners want to work for firms that have high quality patents but several considerations suggest that this is not the explanation for the correlation […]

Bear with me for a second while I check to see if there’s any obvious outrageousness this morning that I need to comment on right away. [checks LAT, NYT, WSJ, WaPo] Nah, not really. So let’s talk science.
You all know about Schrödinger’s cat, poor thing, don’t you? The basic idea behind the experiment is that in the quantum world of particles we don’t know if a particle changes state until we observe it. Before that, it’s in an inderterminate state doing nothing in particular. So Erwin Schrödinger proposed that we put a cat in a box along with a particle […]

Through the metal detectors, past the indoor basketball court dotted with men in orange, and into a small whitewashed room with six telephones, New Jersey’s resident marijuana activist sat behind a window. He sat at the fourth phone, his face framed by a thick border of blue paint around the polycarbonate glass, chipped in some areas. His dreadlocks were tied back and his calm gray-colored eyes were underlined by dark bags. He was tired.

Former Chicago police commander Jon Burge was involved with several officers in the torture of more than 110 black men. He was never held fully accountable for the trauma inflicted on black communities and died on September 19.
At the trial for former Officer Jason Van Dyke, who is accused of murdering Laquan McDonald, former Fraternal Order of Police president Dean Angelo spoke about Burge.
“Jon Burge put a lot of bad guys in prison,” Angelo stated. “You know, people picked a career apart that was considered for a long time to be an honorable career and a very effective […]

On Friday, the firm Medium Buying reported that the NRCC had canceled its entire TV reservation to aid Republican Rep. Keith Rothfus in what’s looking like an increasingly uphill battle against Democratic Rep. Conor Lamb in Pennsylvania. A few weeks ago, Medium reported the committee had cut its reservation, which the NRCC said stood at $3.8 million in late April, for the period of Sept. 12 to Oct. 8. The NRCC soon insisted that they were only redirecting their money to the final weeks of the campaign and hadn’t reduced their spending by “one penny.” Well, now they’ve reduced their […]
